We frequently discuss science and religion -- or, sadly
science vs. religion -- on these froups. Along these
lines, the Templeton Prize, awarded for "progress in religion",
was given a number of times to scientists
whose work, in their opinion, helped
bridge the divide. It's the biggest sorta-science
prize in existence, more lucrative than the
Nobel. This was unsettling to some in the science
community, and sometimes scientists who accepted
the award came under criticism.

Scientific American's obit, which mentions this issue:

http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=john-templeton-philanthro

PZ Myers on the subject:

http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/07/templeton_discovers_mortality.php

There was a comment -- either in New Scientist or Scientific American;
I wish I could dig it up -- to the effect that if John Templeton was
hoping that science would validate religion, it was "the worst investment
he ever made."

Ummm, Cary, why are you posting an URL without saying anything about it?
It's pretty rude to expect everyone to go to the website to find out what
the fuck you are referring to. I mean, really - if you've nothing to say,
why post it?

I assumed anyone interested in Science/Religion issues would
recognize the name John Templeton. Just like everyone
recognized the name George Carlin or PZ Meyers.

Yeah, I recognized the name. I've been amused at some of the things he
wasted his money on over the years. I wish I could have tapped into that
cash flow just a little... the easiest money to be made on the planet,
and the most guilt free.

Some folks in our astronomy department won a grant for a lecture
series, "Astrobiology and the Sacred". A whole long lectures
series with invited lecturers -- scientists, theologians, artists.
I myself went to see four lectures by paleontologist John Conway Morris,
of Gould's "Wonderful Life" fame (believes God started life; evolution
did the rest) and cell biologist Ursula Goodenough (stone atheist,
but still able to look on nature as sacred), as well as our
own department's Nick Woolfe. It was a good idea, and I now
wish I had gone to hear more folks. I have absolutely no
objection to hearing smart people kick around the questions,
and there was no attempt to either exclude one side or to
invite only one side.

When they are introduced as scientists and talk religion they're being
dishonest.

The religious audience thinks they are talking science.

Not knowing anything about him, what gives you the impression that he was an
asshole? Or do you simply always assume that everyone else shares your

I'm still waiting for Templeton's military equivalent (Bert
Stubblebine) to kick off. I had the misfortune of actually meeting MG
Stubblebine when he was my Commanding General back in '82. The man was
fruitier than a nutcake then and from what I've read he's just gotten
nuttier after he was made to retire in '84. The man has done immense
damage to the intelligence community with his incompetence and simply
threw away millions on charlatans and frauds.
